Dr Annalese Semmler is a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy at QUT, specialising in pharmacogenomics. Her early research in genetic and epigenetic profiling of lung diseases sparked a longstanding interest in how genomic variation influences drug response. She later established a heart failure research program investigating the molecular behaviour of β adrenoceptors and the impact of their genetic variation on therapeutic outcomes. Dr Semmler has since expanded her pharmacogenomics work to mental health, including studies in refractory depression. A strong advocate for workforce education, she has taught pharmacogenomics to pharmacy students for over a decade and regularly presents to health professionals. In 2023, she developed an online QUTeX course introducing personalised medicine and pharmacogenomics. She currently supervises five PhD students, three of whom focus on pharmacogenomic research.
