Workshop 1: Advanced Life Support for Adults

Workshop - Coming soon

Overview

This immersive, hands-on workshop equips nurse anaesthetists and theatre teams with the skills and confidence to manage cardiac arrest in the operating theatre. The session blends established ALS principles with perioperative realities, focusing on anaesthetic-related complications, surgical challenges, and pharmacologic nuances. Through operating theatre scenarios, participants will refine their ability to lead, communicate, and intervene effectively in high-stakes intraoperative emergencies.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify perioperative-specific causes of cardiac arrest
  • Adapt ALS algorithms to the intraoperative setting.
  • Ensure adequate oxygenation in the setting of cardiac arrest
  • Provide effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation despite a range of perioperative barriers.
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork and leadership using crisis resource management principles.
  • Engage in structured debriefing to enhance clinical insight and team performance.

Workshop Content

  • Perioperative Cardiac Arrest Scenarios
  • Tailored ALS Protocols
  • Effective Airway and Ventilation Techniques
  • Anaesthetic Pharmacology in Emergencies
  • Team-Based Simulation and Debriefing
  • Time for Questions, Reflection, and Peer Learning

Why This Workshop Matters

Cardiac arrest in the operating theatre demands a unique, rapid, and coordinated response. Nurse anaesthetists are often at the forefront of these critical moments. This workshop empowers providers to adapt ALS principles to the perioperative context, enhancing their ability to lead resuscitative efforts with clarity and confidence. The focus on anaesthetic-based scenarios, teamwork, and decision-making under pressure ensures participants leave with practical, evidence-informed strategies that directly improve patient safety and outcomes. By fostering a collaborative and reflective learning space, this session strengthens the role of nurse anaesthetists as leaders in advanced resuscitation.
