Professor Stephen Gatt graduated MD from the Royal University of Malta in 1975 as gold medallist in Surgery. After interning at Parramatta Hospital, Sydney, he pursued residencies at Royal Prince Alfred and St. Vincent’s Hospitals, becoming the first Registrar in Emergency Medicine at SVH.
He completed anaesthetic and intensive care training through the Prince Henry/Prince of Wales scheme, earning FFARACS in Anaesthesia (1983) with Endorsement in Intensive Care (1982). His career progressed from Staff Specialist at Prince of Wales Hospital to Visiting Professor at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham & Women’s Hospital (1983-1985), where he specialized in obstetric anaesthesia.
Returning to Australia, he was appointed Head of Anaesthesia at the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW, 1985), the youngest director at any Inner Metropolitan Teaching Hospital in Australia. At RHW, he established the world’s first Obstetric Intensive Care Unit. He advanced to Associate Professor at UNSW. He held multiple Directorates in several Specialties, including Area Chair of Anaesthesia across multiple hospitals in South Eastern Sydney and Presiding Member of the University of New South Wales Critical Care Directorate. He is a tenured Professor of Anaesthesia and Reanimation at the University of Udayana, Bali. Indonesia.
His distinguished career includes Fellowship of multiple Royal Colleges, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM, 1997), and Membership in Malta’s National Order of Merit (MOM, 2000). He has served as president of various international medical societies. He is currently President of the Obstetric Society of Asia and Oceania. He has authored five textbooks, over 200 scientific papers, and organised many international congresses. Beyond clinical practice, he is renowned for his altruistic and charitable endeavours. He holds leadership roles in humanitarian organisations, including the Federation of Maltese Abroad and the Orders of Malta and the Holy Sepulchre, combining medical expertise with extensive community service.
