Prof. Michael Burns

Michael J. Burns, DNAP, CRNA is Assistant Professor and Assistant Program Director of the Nurse
Anesthesia Program at Vanderbilt University. A nationally recognized Certified Registered Nurse
Anesthetist with over 25 years of clinical experience, he specializes in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery
(ERAS), opioid‐sparing regional techniques, and acute pain management. Dr. Burns previously served as
Vice President and Education Chair of the Missouri Association of Nurse Anesthetists, leading statewide
education and professional development. Internationally, he directs Nurse Anesthesia training
collaborations in Cameroon, emphasizing simulation‐based learning, ultrasound proficiency, and 3D
printed airway innovation. His award‐winning research—recognized by ASRA and IFNA—advances ERAS
protocols and anesthesia innovation in low‐resource settings. He frequently presents at major
conferences including ASRA, ESRA, andtheWorldCongressofAnaesthesiologists, and serves as an
expert consultant for leading medical device companies. His work integrates education, innovation, and
global health to advance anesthesia practice worldwide
